Welcome to Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences

At the heart of Central Delhi, Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, caters to the dental needs of all those who visit New Delhi. The institute is situated in a spacious campus alongside the city's four prestigious landmark hospitals namely, Maulana Azad Medical College, Lok Nayak Hospital, G. B Pant Hospital and Guru Nanak Eye Centre.

Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences is named after one of the intellectual giants of the Indian history, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first education minister of independent India. The Maulana Azad Medical College and Associated Hospitals have been a part of many significant events throughout history. The foundation of Irwin Hospital was laid by Baron Irwin of Kirby Undertale, British Viceroy and governor general of India on 10th January, 1930. The hospital started functioning a few years later. The present O.P.D. block was inaugurated by the then Hon’ble Minister of Health D.P. Karmarkaran on 5th April 1961. The hospital was renamed Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital on 6th December, 1997.

Maulana Azad Medical College was inaugurated by Prime Minister Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru in February 1961. Considering the dental demands of the people of Delhi, Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences began, as a small department of dentistry under Maulana Azad Medical College and associated Lok Nayak Hospital. eminent dental surgeons including Dr. P.P. Sawhney and Dr. P.L. Khurana, worked on an honorary basis during the 3rd quarter of the last century and laid the foundation of MAIDS.

1983 was a landmark year in which the first batch of BDS students were admitted to MAMC and Dr. P.P. Thukral was formally appointed as the first associate professor and head of the dental wing. Dr. A.N. Srivastava was appointed the head in 1984, followed by Dr. N.C. Sangal in 1991. As the Dental Wing was gaining more and more popularity in and around Delhi, the OPD attendance stated increasing demand for dental care, the Dental Wing also underwent rapid changes.

In 1995, Dr. Mahesh Verma took over the reins from N.C. Sangal and, along with his team, led the transformation of the Dental wing into a full-fledged dental college and hospital. Initially named Maulana Azad Dental College and Hospital, the college was elevated to an autonomous institute under the Delhi Government, and was rechristened Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences in 2006. The numbers of BDS seats were increased from 20 to 40, and the present intake is 50 seats. MDS courses were also introduced in 2007; the institute now offers MDS courses in 9 specialities. Presently there are 22 post graduate seats in different specialities of dentistry.

Thus, within a short period of time, with an aid of its hardworking staff and dynamism of its leaders the institute has become the premiere Government Dental College in whole of India. Situated in the heart of the Capital City, the institution enjoys the best of the Old and New Delhi, and is the first recognised Government Dental College in the National Capital region of Delhi. The institute was declared a “CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE” by the Delhi Government for its tremendous contribution in providing high quality dental care to the masses.

Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences has added yet another feather in its cap by being the first Dental College in the country to receive accreditation from the prestigious National Accreditation Board of Hospitals and Health Care Providers. The application of NABH norms have helped us in identifying and tackling deficiencies and physical and manpower requirements. In addition, it has also fine-tuned and upgraded the awareness, skills and knowledge of the faculty, staff and students to International Standards for Healthcare.

We also have the rare honour of being rated the “Best Dental College in India by NIRF 2019 and independent surveys of Outlook, India Today and The Week Magazine. The institute, with its glorious past and a promising future, is working tirelessly to reach greater heights in the service of the nation by providing state of the art, affordable care to its patients. In September 2011-2012, competing against some big names in the healthcare industry, MAIDS for the second consecutive year was awarded the prestigious “FICCI Award” for operational excellence in healthcare and FICCI Award for Social Initiative-2018 & 2020. Our aims of taking dental care to the Patient’s doorstep were achieved through the “Mobile Dental Clinic Project” in remote parts of Delhi under NATIONAL HEALTH MISSION with 6 mobile dental vans. Needless to say, our team at the institute is working sincerely to make it happen. Another feather in the cap was the recognition as “National Resource Centre for Oral Health and Tobacco Cessation” under National oral Health Program, MHF& W, and India.

Working with the philosophy that, the only way to reach your goals is to keep walking, the Phase 2 building has been established. The new building has 12 more floors dedicated to research and improvement in Dental Education. The institution strives to excel in all spheres of patient care, dental education and research, bringing the best facilities and skills to cater to the community at large.
